Dental Implants
What is a dental implant and what are the benefits?
A dental implant is an artificial root constructed from titanium. The implant is inserted into the jaw where a missing tooth is and provides a strong foundation for a fixed replacement tooth.
A crown, which looks just like a natural tooth, is then fitted onto the implant. The benefit of implants is they prevent bone loss and if a bridge or denture is fitted instead, bone loss continues.
Also, having a bridge fitted instead means the healthy teeth either side need to be ground down to make a support for the bridge to be attached. However, having an implant means you only need to place a crown on the gap and you can leave the other healthy teeth.
Replacing teeth is important because it keeps your smile, keeps your chewing ability and stops bone loss.
